This brand-new urban development is a striking example of architectural prowess, harmoniously marrying ultramodern interior design with the timeless facades of historic buildings that grace its exterior. The Alter Wall, at number 12, has been transformed into a city heaven, a cultural hub, and a shopping destination, breathing new life into the vibrant heart of Hamburg. The history of Alter Wall is as diverse and storied as the city itself. Initially serving as a fortification in the 15th century, it later became a chic boulevard for shopping and commerce at the turn of the century. Renowned poet Heinrich Heine once enjoyed Parisian delicacies along this historic street. Today, meticulously restored sand and natural stone facades, protected as historic monuments, exude the charming atmosphere of the fin-de-siècle era, creating a unique backdrop for the Bucerius Passage. The architectural marvel of the Bucerius Passage is a result of a spectacular transformation. The old buildings hidden behind the historic facades were completely demolished, leaving the slender centuries-old fronts exposed and supported by hundreds of steel beams. Meanwhile, the interiors underwent meticulous reconstruction, resulting in a magnificent blend of tradition and contemporary allure. At the heart of the Bucerius Passage lies the Bucerius Kunst Forum, a revered art institution in Hamburg. With its new dramatic exhibition spaces within the Alter Wall, the Kunst Forum continues to draw art enthusiasts from around the world. Occupying four stories and encompassing 3,400 square meters, the forum features 850 square meters of exhibition space, an auditorium with an atrium, a studio, and a shop. International and local designers converge, creating a harmonious and captivating environment that reflects the cosmopolitan spirit of Hamburg. One of the insider tips for visitors is to enjoy the view from the Alster Canal Bridge, located at the back of the house. From this vantage point, guests can take in the beauty of the Alsterfleet, a waterway that weaves its way from Alster to Elbe, bridging the Old and New Town and connecting distinct retail segments. It links the exclusive luxury offerings of Neuer Wall and Passagenviertel with the diverse brand world of Mönckebergstrasse and Spitalerstrasse, providing a picturesque journey through Hamburg's retail landscape. The lighting design within the Passage adds another layer to its ambiance. Pendant lights of various sizes, featuring "hyperbolic geometry," cast dramatic lighting effects upward and downward, creating a dynamic and ever-changing illumination. The play of hidden and visible light points within luminous rings gives the Passage a sense of vitality, evolving with every step. The Bucerius Passage stands as a symbol of Hamburg's dynamism and its commitment to preserving and celebrating its history. From the historic facades to the contemporary interiors, from the artistic lighting to the cultural haven of the Bucerius Kunst Forum, every element contributes to the passage's unique character. Bucerius Passage

The Bucerius Passage – a brand new city heaven in beautiful historic buildings

The Bucerius Passage, nestled in the heart of Hamburg, stands as one of the city's most recent urban developments, seamlessly blending ultramodern inside design with the historic facades that adorn its exterior. Its construction was nothing short of spectacular, involving the complete demolition of the old buildings hidden behind those timeless facades. For months, the slender, centuries-old facades stood exposed, supported only by hundreds of steel beams, while the interiors of the buildings were meticulously reconstructed, revealing a magnificent transformation.

Situated adjacent to City Hall and the Hamburg Exchange, the Alter Wall is a bustling commercial street that thrived well into the 19th century. In the 20th century, it became synonymous with banks and offices, but today it boasts the distinction of being Hamburg's longest contiguous historical facade. Stretching over 150 meters, this meticulously restored and protected monument along the Alten Wall is a true rarity within the city.

Behind the historical facade, the architects at Gerkan, Marg und Partner have fashioned a wholly new world. The development of the Alter Wall has breathed additional new life into Hamburg, delivering 15,000 square meters of space dedicated to art, leisure, shopping, and an additional 18,000 square meters designed for contemporary office spaces.

Within the Bucerius Passage, one can discover an array of exciting stores, offices, and a stunning modern bridge that spans the waterway. Here, international and local designers converge with striking architectural design to create a harmonious and captivating environment.

A distinctive lighting ambiance enhances the Passage, as pendant lights of various sizes, featuring "hyperbolic geometry," cast dramatic lighting effects upward to the ceiling and downward to the floor. The interplay of hidden and visible light points within the luminous rings imbues the Passage with a sense of dynamic, ever-changing illumination. A gold-toned metal lattice-covered cube, open at both ends and fitted with LEDs for both direct and indirect lighting, adds a special touch, its modulation evolving dynamically as one moves through the entrance area, creating an impression of ever-shifting light.

The Bucerius Kunst Forum, a revered art institution in Hamburg, has now unveiled its new dramatic exhibition spaces within the heart of the Alter Wall. Drawing thousands of art enthusiasts to the city annually, the Kunst Forum, with over 350,000 annual visitors, has become an integral part of Hamburg's art scene since 2002. The new premises, occupying four stories and encompassing 3,400 square meters, not only feature 850 square meters of exhibition space but also house an auditorium with an atrium, a studio, and a shop.

The lobby of the art forum, anchored by a ticket counter and the shop, offers a central orientation towards the Bucerius Passage. The main staircase, fashioned from dark walnut wood steps and sides, provides a warm contrast to the dark terrazzo floor and predominantly white walls and built-in elements. The expansive exhibition hall on the first upper floor can be utilized as a whole or divided into more intimate sections, all bathed in optimal lighting thanks to expansive luminous ceiling panels. An entire floor has been dedicated to the auditorium and its atrium, where events such as readings and concerts find their stage.

On the rear side of the Bucerius Passage, a waterway weaves its way from Alster to Elbe. The Alsterfleet not only is the boundary between the Old and New Town but also bridges two distinct retail segments. It connects the exclusive luxury segment of Neuer Wall and Passagenviertel with the diverse brand world of Mönckebergstrasse and Spitalerstrasse.

The history of Alter Wall is diverse and storied. In the 15th century, it served as a fortification, securing the eastern flank of the old town. Renowned poet Heinrich Heine once savored Parisian delicacies here, and at the turn of the century, shopping and commerce pulsated along this chic boulevard. Today, the meticulously restored sand and natural stone facade, a protected historic monument, exudes the atmosphere of the fin-de-siècle era.
