Colonnaden

The Colonnaden – Hamburg's Grand Shopping Boulevard in the Heart of the City

The Colonnaden, nestled in the heart of Hamburg, stands as an exceptionally charming shopping street in the city. This historic pedestrian zone, protected as a monument, was established in 1877 and is characterized by its striking colonnades and elegant buildings from the Gründerzeit period.

Elegant Gründerzeit buildings and Neorenaissance facades add to the street's distinctive charm. Particularly notable is the arcaded walkway that gave the street its name. In 1880, the street was, interestingly, a private road owned by the Wex brothers. It wasn't until 1974 that it was declared a pedestrian zone, and since 1978, its magnificent buildings have enjoyed protected status as historical landmarks.

The Colonnaden

The Colonnaden continues to honor the Hanseatic merchant tradition to this day. The commitment to the highest quality and personalized, stylish advice sets this place apart. The Colonnaden is offering a unique blend of high-end shopping, art, culture, and individualistic lifestyle. This is a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle while being right in the center of Hamburg's downtown. Beyond its architectural significance, the Colonnaden offers a shopping experience that diverges from the mainstream.

Within its independently-run shops, you'll discover a variety of goods that extend beyond the ordinary. Whether you're in search of the trends of tomorrow, contemporary fashion, or nostalgic treasures from yesteryears, shopping here transforms into a one-of-a-kind exploration. Discerning and curious customers will encounter an extensive array of products that connect living, cultivated life, and work with style and individuality.

From the moment you step into these shops, you'll be immersed in sensual realms of originality and an atmosphere that cannot be duplicated. In the world of fine wines, spirits, pipes, or tobacco, the young and experienced staff captivate customers with their expertise, sharing fascinating insights into their products. It's here that patrons may blow the smoke of Colombian cigars across the counter or sample a fine vintage.

During the warmer months, the Colonnaden transforms into Hamburg's longest summer terrace, exuding a Venetian ambiance. The grand street is redolent with the scent of espresso, and its numerous street cafes and restaurants reflect La Dolce Vita. Meanwhile, the artistic bronze fountain by Detlef Birgfeld cools the heated air around the Gustav-Mahler-Platz, the central square of the Colonnaden.

The Colonnaden devotes itself to Sunday shopping and the legendary antique market four times a year. It is one of Hamburg's most splendid streets, designated exclusively for pedestrians since 1974. The Colonnaden predominantly features small specialty stores, offering everything from sneakers and tobacco to outdoor clothing.

In the middle of the street, right by the imposing Hamburg State Opera building, you can take a break and savor the serene ambiance, despite being in the heart of the bustling city. Throughout the year, the Colonnaden hosts various events, such as the Maskenzauber or antique markets, which further enhance its appeal.

Before 1765, the site was occupied by the Gänsemarkt Opera, a leading musical center in Europe until 1738. Initially, the Colonnaden evolved into a grand boulevard around 1870 as a private road owned by the Wex brothers. The first Gründerzeit houses with their beautiful colonnades emerged here around 1880-1890, creating an ensemble that continues to exude historical charm.

The name "Colonnaden" refers to the colonnades, even though they are technically arcades. Originally, the city planners intended to name this street Kaiserstraße. However, historian Otto Beneke, who opposed an aristocratic name, as he found it unsuitable for the bourgeois Hanseatic city, argued for the current name.

Since 1974, this charming spot in Hamburg's city center has been predominantly reserved for pedestrians and has been under monument protection since 1978. As a unique urban feature in the heart of the city, the Colonnaden still very much distinguishes itself from the other shopping streets of the inner city.
