The Deichtorhallen Hamburg stand as a prominent institution showcasing contemporary art and photography. The northern Deichtorhalle, known as the Hall for Contemporary Art, serves as a venue for large-scale projects presenting contemporary artistic expressions. The focus is on solo exhibitions by painters, sculptors, and designers of international acclaim. These projects are typically developed in close collaboration with the artists, reflecting over 160 major exhibitions since 1989. In addition to extensive monographic exhibitions featuring renowned artists like Andy Warhol, Martin Kippenberger, or Louise Bourgeois, the hall introduces younger artists in comprehensive exhibitions, such as Andreas Gursky in 1994, Jason Rhoades in 1999, and Jonathan Meese in 2006. The southern building of the Deichtorhallen houses the House of Photography, established in 2005, which became home to two extensive photographic collections: the F.C. Gundlach Collection. The House of Photography presents dynamic international exhibitions covering photography from the 19th and 20th centuries to contemporary works and aspects of the digital revolution.

The highlight of the House of Photography is the F.C. Gundlach Collection, offering a profound exploration of artistic photography and fashion photography. Between 1911 and 1914, the Deichtorhallen were erected on the grounds of the former Berliner Bahnhof, the Hamburg counterpart to Berlin's Hamburger Bahnhof, as market halls. They represent one of the few preserved examples of industrial architecture from the transition period between Art Nouveau and the expressions of the 20th century.
