Since its inauguration, the gallery has systematically expanded or established focal points within its collection. This allows for the exemplary presentation of key international developments and prominent artist positions since 1960, showcasing main works and revealing connections. The collection features paintings by Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter, and Georg Baselitz from the 1960s, Pop Art icons such as Andy Warhol, David Hockney, R. B. Kitaj, and K. P. Brehmer, as well as central works from the Arte povera movement by Jannis Kounellis and Mario Merz. Joseph Beuys' Plastisch/thermisches Urmeter and the felt suit are significant works within the collection.

 

The Galerie der Gegenwart houses pivotal positions in Minimal Art and Conceptual Art, strengthened by loans from private collections. Artists like Robert Morris, Sol LeWitt, Dan Graham, Donald Judd, Robert Mangold, and Hanne Darboven are represented. The rejection of traditional forms of painting and sculpture in the 1960s and 1970s is documented through the material art of Franz Erhard Walther and Reiner Ruthenbeck. Sculptural positions include Thomas Schütte, Reinhard Mucha, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Cady Noland, Rosemarie Trockel, and Isa Genzken.
