Kunsthalle Hamburg
Journey Through Art: Exploring Centuries of Creativity at Hamburger Kunsthalle
The Hamburger Kunsthalle stands as one of Germany's most significant public art collections, spanning eight centuries from the Middle Ages to the present day. While it traditionally emphasizes 19th-century art, it also boasts dedicated sections for Old Masters and Classical Modernism. A distinct architectural complex is dedicated to modern and contemporary art.
The Kunsthalle's Kupferstichkabinett holds over 130,000 prints, and its library contains over 175,000 volumes, including approximately 3,000 illustrated and artist books, available for on-site perusal in the study and reading rooms. The Kunsthalle's architectural ensemble comprises the old part (constructed from 1863 to 1868), new part (built from 1909 and extended from 1912 to 1921), and the Galerie der Gegenwart (constructed from 1993 to 1996), all interconnected seamlessly.
The foundation of the collection originated from the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce, which, in 1850, inaugurated the city's first public painting gallery in the Neue Börse building. The majority of the paintings were donations and bequests from Hamburg merchants. Among the beloved collections of Hamburg residents are those from the German Romantic period:
Caspar David Friedrich (1774 – 1840), the most significant artist of German Romanticism.
Philipp Otto Runge (1777 - 1810), especially "Die Hülsenbeckschen Kinder" (the children Hülsenbeck).
Max Liebermann (1847-1935), credited with introducing modernity to German painting.
Many visitors are captivated by these magnificent paintings and often purchase postcards or catalogs as mementos to take home.
Explore also the historic Säulenhalle and visit Café Liebermann, located within the Kunsthalle complex. The space is vast and exudes historical beauty. The museum shop, situated in the foyer of the Hamburger Kunsthalle, offers an extensive range of publications, stationery, and gift ideas related to the collection and current exhibitions. In addition to art books, catalogs, and theoretical writings, the shop offers a wide selection of posters, postcards, artist editions, as well as unique design items and drawing supplies. Entrance to the museum shop is possible without a ticket.
The Hamburger Kunsthalle stands as a testament to the rich tapestry of artistic expression spanning centuries. Whether marveling at the masterpieces of German Romanticism or exploring the vibrant realms of contemporary art, the Kunsthalle offers a journey through time and creativity. With its diverse collections, historic ambiance, and charming amenities like Café Liebermann, a visit to the Kunsthalle promises an enriching and unforgettable experience for art enthusiasts and casual visitors alike.
