Laeiszhalle
Harmony in Elegance: The Timeless Laeiszhalle - A Symphony of Classic Music and Historic Grandeur
At the heart of the musical city of Hamburg stands the Laeiszhalle, a venue that has welcomed and continues to host stars from the world of music since its grand inauguration in 1908. As Hamburg's esteemed establishment for curated musical experiences, the Laeiszhalle places a special emphasis on genres such as Early Music, Lieder recitals, chamber music, and jazz.
Being the largest and most advanced concert hall in Germany at the time, the Laeiszhalle was ceremoniously inaugurated on June 4, 1908. It holds a significant place in Hamburg as a cultural monument of Neo-Baroque architecture, symbolizing the focal point of the city's musical life.
Beyond hosting internationally renowned artists, the Laeiszhalle provides a professional platform for Hamburg-based musicians, fostering an elegant and familial atmosphere. Notably, the venue is the home of the Symphoniker Hamburg, the resident orchestra of the Laeiszhalle.
For a century, the Laeiszhalle held a paramount position in Hamburg's musical landscape. Opening its doors in 1908, the concert hall soon welcomed illustrious composers like Richard Strauss, Sergej Prokofjew, Igor Strawinsky, and Paul Hindemith, who conducted their own works here. Audiences experienced epochal concerts featuring emerging stars such as the 12-year-old Yehudi Menuhin and the young Vladimir Horowitz, as well as legends like Maria Callas.
Even after the inauguration of the Elbphilharmonie in 2017, the Great Hall of the Laeiszhalle remains one of the finest philharmonic concert halls in Europe. The Symphoniker Hamburg, as the resident orchestra, regularly performs here, and the hall continues to host diverse programs presented by other orchestras, choirs, and organizers. Renowned pianists like Grigory Sokolov and Martha Argerich, as well as vocalists like Cecilia Bartoli and Jonas Kaufmann, attest to the hall's excellent acoustics and unique ambiance.
The Elbphilharmonie and Laeiszhalle are jointly managed under a shared general directorate. Since 2017, the "Symphoniker Hamburg – Laeiszhalle Orchester" has served as the resident orchestra of Hamburg's first concert hall, the Laeiszhalle. Embracing the tradition of musical excellence, they combine the potentials of a modern symphony orchestra with the identity of a vibrant cultural institution. Sylvain Cambreling, a highly esteemed conductor known for his compelling, imaginative, and colorful performances, has been the chief conductor of the Symphoniker Hamburg since 2018.
The Philharmonic State Orchestra, Hamburg's oldest and busiest orchestra, serves as the pit orchestra for approximately 250 opera and ballet performances annually at the State Opera on Dammtorstraße. Concurrently, they curate high-quality Philharmonic Concerts.
Since the summer of 2015, Kent Nagano has been the chief conductor of the Philharmonic State Orchestra and the General Music Director of Hamburg. Renowned for his expertise in the major orchestral works of the 20th century, Nagano and his musicians carry on a rich tradition that began in 1908 when the Philharmonikers celebrated the inauguration of the Laeiszhalle with a festive concert.
