The Rathausmarkt Christmas Market

Enchanting Alleys and Twinkling Lights: A Magical Journey through Hamburg's Rathausmarkt

Undoubtedly, the most visited Christmas market in Hamburg is the one at Rathausmarkt. Every year, during the Advent season, nearly 3 million visitors flock to Rathausplatz. If you don't mind crowds and appreciate a historical atmosphere, you can immerse yourself in the hustle and bustle here. A special highlight is the thrice-daily performance where Santa Claus flies over the heads of the crowd.

In the beautifully illuminated wooden stalls, craftsmen diligently ply their trades. A blacksmith hammers away at metal, bakers deftly drop Schmalzkuchen into hot fat. In the Toy Alley, wooden toys click and clack, and a nostalgic historical carousel from 1932 joyfully spins its rounds.

The market architecture of the Winter Wonderland at Rathaus was designed by none other than Roncalli Circus director Bernhard Paul. Elegant craftsmanship, unique gift ideas amid quaint alleys with names like Spielzuggasse (Toy Alley), caress the eyes and soul, as do intricately decorated huts and historical treasures from the Roncalli Museum.

The creation of a special, exquisite mulled wine is part of the creative abundance, themed alleys captivate, and Santa Claus flies in his reindeer sleigh over the historical Christmas market. In the detail-oriented alleys, there are special culinary delights, market-exclusive mulled wine from an award-winning winemaker from the Palatinate, and plenty of handicrafts to discover. There's even an organic mulled wine created in collaboration with a German winemaker. The brass quartet provides some Christmas tunes.

In addition to a Toy Alley, there is craftsmanship and woodcarvings to marvel at and purchase, including pieces from Tyrol. Furthermore, there are Nuremberg gingerbreads, and instead of plastic, only handicrafts and unique gift ideas abound.

The market operated by Roncalli follows the motto "Art instead of Commerce" – accordingly, the 80 stalls feature a lot of craftsmanship and woodcarvings to see and buy. And it's especially sustainable: The market is exclusively powered by green energy, and plastic packaging is taboo.

For over 20 years, a sparkling sled has been zooming over the visitors of the Christmas market at Rathausplatz. Inside sits an artist in a fire-resistant costume. Santa Claus climbs the railing, pauses to adjust the black leather gloves once more. Then he seizes the sled, pulls it towards him, and agilely climbs into the threateningly swaying vehicle. Before taking off in the airy heights, the red cap is adjusted, and then Santa takes the reins of the reindeer in hand, beginning his flight over Hamburg's Rathausplatz.

This procedure repeats three times a day. Then, the gazes of the Christmas market visitors shoot upward. There is a wire stretched from the big Christmas tree at Alsterfleet to the eastern wing of the town hall. From here, Santa Claus zooms over their heads. "Ho ho ho," echoes from the speakers.

As the radiant lights and festive melodies fill the air, the Rathausmarkt unfolds as a captivating canvas of holiday enchantment. In the heart of Hamburg, this historical Roncalli Christmas Market weaves together tradition and spectacle, drawing crowds into a magical world crafted by skilled artisans and the spirit of the season. From the captivating carousel's nostalgic charm to the exhilarating flight of the daring Santa Claus, every moment on Rathausplatz resonates with the joy and wonder of Christmas.
