Händel, during his years in Hamburg, served as a violinist and harpsichordist at the opera. In 1705, his first opera, Almira, premiered here. Notable composers like Puccini and Tchaikovsky were engaged to conduct their own works. In 1891, Pollini appointed Gustav Mahler as the successor to Hans von Bülow as the First Kapellmeister. From October 1906 to 1913, Enrico Caruso captivated the Hamburg audience with various roles. Plácido Domingo made his debut in January 1967 as Cavaradossi in Tosca, marking the beginning of his successes in Europe that would propel him to a global career.

Australian conductor Simone Young held the dual roles of director and general music director from 2005 to 2015. Since 2015, Kent Nagano has been the general music director of the Hamburgische Staatsoper and the Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Hamburg. Swiss director Georges Delnon serves as the opera and orchestra director. At the start of the 2025/2026 season, Omer Meir Wellber is set to succeed Nagano as conductor, coinciding with Tobias Kratzer's appointment as the new director.
