The Theater im Hafen Hamburg, officially known as Stage Theater im Hafen Hamburg, stands as a prominent musical theater that opened its doors in 1994 under the ownership of the Stage Entertainment Group. Located on the Elbe island of Steinwerder, opposite the iconic Landungsbrücken and adjacent to the Theater an der Elbe, which debuted in 2014. This theater has been the stage for the musical "Der König der Löwen" (The Lion King) since December 2, 2001.
In preparation for "Der König der Löwen," significant modifications and expansions were made to the stage and stage house. The foyer underwent enhancements, featuring the distinctive Skyline Restaurant. Transforming the theater's façade into its characteristic appearance, a remarkable 7 × 50 m glass front was added to the restaurant.
The stage tower was adorned with the iconic lion head logo of the musical, leading to the renaming of the venue as "Theater im Hafen." The foyer and restaurant were transformed into an art exhibition showcasing the collection of the company's founder and art enthusiast, Joop van den Ende.
Outside, on the Musical Boulevard, two sculptures by Niki de Saint Phalle, "Blue Nana" and "Nana and Dolphin," were installed, along with Salvador Dalí's over 7-meter-tall bronze sculpture, "Space Elephant," from the van den Ende collection.
On December 2, 2001, "Der König der Löwen" celebrated its Germany premiere at the Theater im Hafen, and since then, it has been performed with great success. The theater's interior is designed in Bordeaux red and black, providing seating for 2046 spectators, with no seat more than 25 meters from the stage. The front house, including the foyer and restaurants, opens to visitors before performances.
The facility boasts seven foyer bars and two bars in the restaurant, ensuring a variety of refreshment options. The Skyline Restaurant, covering 600 m² across two levels, accommodates 220 guests. Furthermore, visitors can explore an extensive art collection featuring over 50 exhibits, including paintings and sculptures by international and North German artists.
